The spring issue of thrive. is here – stories on dental health, pain management, and staying active in your golden years

May 18, 2023

The Spring 2023 edition of Thrive. magazine features a variety of topics on healthy aging. In addition to an inspiring cover story on Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota member Martha Stewart-Arradondo and her love of staying active, the edition covers:

The connections between oral health and overall health

Dr. Amy Fendrich, senior medical director at Blue Cross, explains how the care we give to our teeth and gums can impact the likelihood of developing other diseases.

A lack of good oral hygiene habits can lead to gum disease, tooth decay and other ailments such as cardiovascular (heart) disease, pneumonia and endocarditis (an infection of the heart).

Opioid alternatives for pain management

In response to a question submitted by a reader, pharmacist Anita Sharma breaks down how and when you should talk with your doctor about tapering down opioid pain management prescriptions, such as Vicodin or morphine – especially when using for long-term recoveries.

Besides known problems with misuse and addiction, opioids taken with other classes of medications can increase the risk of dizziness and falls. Other side effects can include irregular heartbeat, depression, and abdominal pain. The good news is that other options are available.

Alternatives include acetaminophen; non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen; and topical products such as a lidocaine patch. Additionally, if you have a Part D prescription drug plan, there are several prescription-strength options alternatives, depending on your needs.

All about respite care

Being a primary caregiver for a loved one can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Taking time for oneself – from running errands to a week-long vacation – is important for the overall wellbeing of caregivers and, in turn, the care receiver.

Respite care is a temporary service where qualified professionals “take the wheel” for a time, allowing primary caregivers to tend to themselves. Learn about where to start with securing respite care plus coverage that may exist for veterans and those on Medicaid.
