DispatchHealth delivers care to right to doorsteps

June 7, 2024

For generations, house calls were the traditional model for physician care in the United States. Throughout the second half of the 20th century, medical visits in the home became exceedingly rare.  Today, one provider in the Blue Cross network is finding renewed value in bringing doctors right to people’s doorsteps.

DispatchHealth, founded in 2013, brings high quality care to members’ homes with services that range from same-day specialty care to 30-day acute care that can serve as an alternative to a hospital stay. We spoke with two members about their experience with DispatchHealth.

Bridge Care: road to recovery

John, a Minnesota resident, recently faced a cascade of life-altering events that tested his strength and resolve.

Recently, John’s sister – and best friend – suffered a series of seizures, intensifying John's already unstable emotional health. The impact was immediate and devastating. Having been sober for less than a year, John relapsed. Around the same time, he found himself without a home and staying with friends.

The situation took a critical turn when John, grappling with his circumstances, took part in a one-week hospital hold to ensure his safety—a period of intense reflection and the beginning of a critical intervention.

It was during this turbulent period in John’s life when DispatchHealth provided not just medical care, but a lifeline. John was no longer in immediate crisis when the DispatchHealth team met him at his friend’s house. However, he was overwhelmed with logistical hurdles.

What followed was a showcase of tailored healthcare. John was already connected with a Blue Cross case manager, who had been actively providing support and resources.

During the visit, the DispatchHealth team took a hands-on approach to organize John's scattered medical paperwork and future appointments. They helped retrieve his hospital discharge paperwork and sift through correspondence with his Blue Cross case manager. Together, they prioritized his immediate needs, planning manageable steps to regain control over his life.

Perhaps the most impactful aspect of the visit was the simple act of presence. John expressed immense relief at having someone to talk through his thoughts. The team assisted in managing his medications, setting up necessary smartphone apps, and arranging transportation for a visit to his sister and a return to work.

By the end of the visit, what John had was more than a list of tasks – he had a blueprint for recovery and the reassurance of continued support.

Acute care: a healing haven

On a quiet morning, Jane, a single mother of three young children, faced an acute health crisis.

Jane's day began unexpectedly in the middle of the night with sudden bouts of digestive issues. Over the course of four hours, she endured severe discomfort with symptoms, rendering her too ill to care for her young family or venture out for medical help. Jane knew the seriousness of her condition but was physically unable to seek the urgent care she needed. Enter, DispatchHealth.

When the advanced practice provider (AAP) – a nurse practitioner or physician assistant – arrived, they found that Jane had all the symptoms of a stomach bug and was dehydrated. After performing the necessary tests, the AAP provider gave Jane IV fluids and medication.

The in-home care setting was transformed into a sanctuary for Jane’s healing. Curtains were closed, soothing music filled the room, and a heated blanket added a comforting touch. These small, thoughtful actions by the DispatchHealth team played a crucial role in easing Jane's discomfort and facilitating a quicker recovery. As the fluids and medication took effect, Jane's condition stabilized.

By the end of the visit, Jane was immensely thankful for the convenience and effectiveness of in-home care, which kept her close to her family while avoiding exposure risks and logistical challenges of a hospital visit.

These experiences not only highlight the capabilities of DispatchHealth but also underscore the profound impact of delivering compassionate care right where patients need it most.
