Celebrating a Blue Moon – in Blue Cross Style

August 30, 2023

Who could be feeling blue about a blue moon? We have an affinity for all things blue at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, so our excitement for this rare supermoon is quite high! Although, yes, we are aware that the moon won’t truly be blue – but we’re willing to let that slide since this is the biggest full moon of 2023.

Top five ways to enjoy the 2023 blue supermoon on the evening of Wednesday, August 30, according to Blue Cross associates:

1. Wear blue

Don some blue threads to celebrate the occasion. Bonus points for wearing something with a Blue Cross logo – take a pic and share it with us on social media.

2. Take in a lakeside view

The western edge of a lake is Mike Shaw’s suggested viewing position according to the Star Tribune article, “Watch for it: Wednesday's super blue moon should be a stunner.” One of our associates in northern Minnesota mentioned Lake Vermilion as the hands-down favorite in their neck of the woods.

3. Hit the road

More than one Blue Cross associate suggests making a trip out of it. (Ok, one said day tripping and one said night-tripping.) We are certain that escaping the city lights will make the super moon appear even more luminous. Just don’t trip in the dark after sunset. Your health insurance plan would like to remind you to bring a flashlight and wear sensible shoes on rough terrain.

4. Wait ‘til morning

According to InTheSky.org, the supermoon will be visible until 5:46 a.m. Central Time the next morning. So if you miss the opportunity on Wednesday night, you can rise early on Thursday to turn your gaze skyward.

5. Zoom in with a telescope (or watch it virtually)

Get a close-up view with that telescope you just remembered storing away in the back of your closet (or borrow one). And if the weather just is not cooperating where you are, you can watch the livestream on Space.com.
