Blue Cross offers next-level resources for families and children living with autism
May 11, 2021It is estimated that nearly one in every 54 children in the United States have autism. Autism is unique to each person in its level of severity, patterns of behavior and how it affects physical and mental functions. Because of the variability of the condition, an official diagnosis of autism can be overwhelming for many families.
But for members of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, there is help. Members have access to a wealth of informational resources. Additionally, because Blue Cross proudly offers the Autism Program, which is dedicated to getting families the support and treatment they need.
“Caring for a child living with autism can be challenging for the entire family,” says Brendan Shane, director of behavioral health at Blue Cross. “Our best hope is that providing proactive intervention and guidance helps caregivers receive the support they need to navigate services.”

Blue Cross introduces the Autism Program
Through the Autism Program at Blue Cross, families are supported by a board-certified behavioral analyst (BCBA) and behavioral health case managers who are there to:
- Help find available in-network providers
- Coordinate between providers and care systems
- Review treatment plans
- Help interpret medical policies and treatment requirements
- Assess and screen for additional family needs
- Provide clinical guidance and caregiver support
- Ensure access to the highest quality, evidence-based applied behavior analysis (ABA) services
And, most importantly, this team serves as an ongoing resource as a child grows. This means that families will be assured that someone will be there to help along the journey as their needs evolve.
Who can benefit
The Autism Program— an offering for Blue Cross MN members who have coverage for autism treatment in their health plan— is available for all children living with autism and their families, regardless of age. However, research has shown that the earlier autism is diagnosed and interventions begin, the more positive the effects are on skills and symptoms throughout a person’s life.
Early intervention programs are specific to each child, but can include:
- Nutrition services
- Physical therapy
- Speech therapy
- Hearing impairment services
- Family services
Early intervention programs help children with physical or emotional needs, social skills, communication skills and more.
Since coverage for Autism services can vary by plan, Blue Cross MN members should call the number on the back of their member card to verify benefits and coverage and ask to speak with a behavioral health case manager.
