Thank Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition when you bike and walk on safer streets

November 28, 2016

We believe that safe, convenient places to be active make communities more vibrant, healthy and strong. As such, we’re proud to support organizations that are creating these kinds of communities. One such organization is the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition.

To support community organizations in creating safe places for physical activity in Minnesota, the Center for Prevention has committed more than $1 million in Active Living for All funding for projects through 2018.

This funding supports organizations like the Minneapolis Bike Coalition as they engage residents and improve places with more walking and biking for everyone.

It really comes down to the simple fact that we see the great work these organizations are doing and are proud to support their efforts to build healthier communities.

Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition: A Grassroots Safe Biking Evolution

In late 2009, a group of Minneapolis residents got together to discuss ways to make streets in Minneapolis safer and more vibrant. Those conversations led to the formation of the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition. The Coalition was able to harness the passion of people who love to bike in Minneapolis to make streets better for everyone.

Since then, with support from individual members and funders like Blue Cross, the organization has grown from 15 people to a network of more than 12,000. They now have 1,300 active volunteers and eight full and part-time staff members.

The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition supports the goal of more than 30 miles of new protected bikeways by 2020 (six+ miles of protected bikeways were built last year alone), a forward-thinking protected bikeway plan and a nation-leading Complete Streets policy.

But that’s not all they’ve done. The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition has hosted 29 Open Streets events (The Center for Prevention has proudly sponsored these.)

In addition, they’ve helped the City of Minneapolis and Hennepin County add their first bicycle and pedestrian coordinators to their staff.

An Evolving Mission: From Bikeability to Walkability

We are excited to share that in the coming year the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition will be updating their mission, name and priorities to include issues related to walkability. With this expanded focus, they will work to ensure that people of all abilities can safely walk and move along and across all streets in Minneapolis.

This work will begin with supporting the implementation of the recently-passed Minneapolis’ Complete Streets policy. This policy plays a big role and will have a long-term impact on how street projects are carried out in Minneapolis.

We see this work as an important step to make Minneapolis a better for everyone, especially communities that have not received equitable investments and resources. Cities that are friendly for biking and walking are stronger and better places to live, work, and play. We are proud to be a partner with the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition as they advance this great work.
