Blue Cross celebrates Pride Month 2024

June 12, 2024

In recognition of June as Pride Month, Blue Cross honors and celebrates the many contributions of Blue Pride, an associate resource group (ARG) for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual associates (LGBTQIA+) and their allies.

Blue Pride is dedicated to being a networking and collaboration resource for Blue Cross associates, reflecting how the mission, vision and goals of Blue Cross emphasize the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB).

We asked members of Blue Pride to share their perspective on identity, work, community and more.

What does Pride Month mean to you?

“To me, Pride Month means being out and unafraid or ashamed of who I am because I think that if all LGBTQ+ people were out and unafraid to be themselves everyone would see that we are all alike and that there is nothing to fear.”

-Mark Johnson, desktop support technician

What does it mean to be part of Blue Pride at Blue Cross?

“Being involved in Blue Pride has been incredibly meaningful for me, both personally and professionally. Finding a community that understands and supports my experiences is invaluable. Blue Pride has provided me with a sense of belonging and has empowered me to be my authentic self at work. It has also offered opportunities for leadership and advocacy, allowing me to contribute to efforts to prioritize equity and inclusion within our organization.”

-Ashley Pattain, senior operations analyst

How do you celebrate Pride Month?

“I celebrate Pride Month by spending time with friends at LGBTQ+ events, supporting local queer businesses and giving back what I can. I read works by queer authors and poets and brush up on queer history. Of course, I go to the Twin Cities Pride Festival and Parade to connect with the community and see what vendors have for volunteer options. The more I can be involved the better.”

-Parker Kuczaboski, member experience advocate

Blue Cross has been named a “Best Place to Work for LGBTQ+ Equality” by the Human Rights Campaign. What does this designation mean to you?

“Being a Blue Cross employee, particularly in light of this recognition, fills me with immense pride and gratitude. It signifies that our company is committed to creating a safe and inclusive workplace for all employees, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This acknowledgment reassures me that my contributions are valued, and that Blue Cross is dedicated to leading by example in the corporate world. It motivates me to continue advocating for equity and to support my colleagues in their journeys toward authenticity and acceptance, while showing up as my authentic self.”

-Ashley Pattain, senior operations analyst

How can others get involved and continue to celebrate the themes of Pride all year long?

“By being themselves to show that we are all one.”

-Mark Johnson, desktop support technician

“Others can get involved and celebrate Pride all year by donating to LGBTQ+ associations, educating themselves on Queer history and current events, and having conversations with family and friends about LGBTQ+ topics.”

-Parker Kuczaboski, member experience advocate

“Others can get involved by advocating for inclusive policies and practices within their workplaces and communities, ensuring that everyone feels safe and valued. Volunteering with LGBTQ+ organizations, donating to relevant causes, and being an ally in everyday interactions are also powerful ways to keep the spirit of Pride alive all year long.”

I transitioned at BCBSMN in 2015-2016, and am still employed here. Transition is an awkward time in a person's life, and BCBSMN made it so much easier than I'd anticipated.

It's pretty wonderful to work here.
