Every year, nearly 2 million seniors are treated in hospital emergency rooms due to injuries like hip fractures and traumatic brain injuries. - Keep a phone and bedside lamp within easy reach
- Keep your bedroom well lit – use nightlights to help you see at night

- Install handrails or grab bars next to the toilet and in the bathtub
- Place a nonslip rug next to the shower or bathtub
- Install a shower chair for improved stability
Living Room
- Remove throw rugs and replace with nonslip rugs
- Remove clutter to allow for clear walking paths
- Keep all cords secured against the wall
Kitchen
- Place items you use frequently within easy reach
- Immediately clean any floor spills
- Buy a sturdy stepstool with a bar to hold onto — never stand on chairs to reach high shelves

- Wear shoes with low heels and rubber soles
- Use handrails on stairs and inclines
- Clear leaves, snow, ice, and clutter from sidewalks, driveways, porches, and decks
- Carry personal items in a shoulder bag, small backpack, or fanny pack to keep hands free to grasp railings
- Use a cane or walker to steady yourself
