Finding community and confidence: Reflections on my Blue Cross internship

July 25, 2024

As a recent college graduate with a degree in communications studies and a minor in public health, finding the right way to enter the working world felt like a challenge. Being part of the Blue Cross summer internship program for 2024 gave me a place to thrive, with many resources and mentors available to help focus and guide the start of my career.

I chose to intern at Blue Cross because of its member-first focus and devotion to public health. The company has a strong sense of community, with each team rallying around the mission to pave the way for everyone to achieve their healthiest life.

I am one of 22 interns across 20 different divisions participating in this year’s program, with the Enterprise Brand Design & Expression team as my home base. The creative culture here is exciting, with talented teams truly devoted to their work. I’ve gotten amazing feedback that has already helped to expand my skills. My passion for health equity along with my abilities in communication and writing have been respected and welcomed.

In addition to providing me with day-to-day responsibilities, the summer internship program is fostering my professional development in a number of ways. The program encourages me to meet with other teams and associate resource groups (ARGs), which are voluntary peer organizations that foster connections based on common interests or lived experiences. These connections allowed me to network with different leaders and gain knowledge on the important work being done throughout the organization to serve every member.

Throughout the summer, the company also hosted 13 intern events and workshops focused on various topics that are core to Blue Cross. For example, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) sessions allowed me to not only feel seen by Blue Cross, but also gain a broader worldview and provide insight into the informed and effective decision-making process that strengthen community connections. I appreciate the opportunity to participate in these sessions with my fellow interns. It made me feel like I belong and gave me more confidence being in a professional workplace environment.

Lastly, the internship program urges everyone to get involved in the places where we live and work. I was able to take part in a company volunteer event with Bridging—a nonprofit an organization that provides furniture and household goods to those in need of housing stability. I enjoyed being able to make a direct impact outside of the company alongside my peers.

As I reflect on my Blue Cross internship experience, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. The support and encouragement I have received from my colleagues and mentors have been invaluable. I know the experience will have an enduring impact on my career path.
