Blue Cross Honors Black History Month 2024

February 9, 2024

At Blue Cross, Black History Month is a time for reflection, learning, and acknowledgment of the invaluable contributions and lived experiences of the Black community throughout our nation’s history.

Learning and Leaning In

Representatives from the African American Professionals Network (AAPN) associate resource group (ARG) took time to share their perspectives and insights on what the company is doing to bring greater awareness of Black History Month to Blue Cross’ workforce throughout the month of February.

“This month brings an opportunity to highlight pioneers from the past, bridge connections to the present, and shape how we move forward in the future,” said Tom Noon, principal financial analyst at Blue Cross and chair of the AAPN. “There hasn’t been one Black History Month where I haven’t learned something new, or experienced a new perspective I can apply to my life. We’re beginning a new year and it’s a great time to feel that energy and to lean into the things that make us different. Those unique experiences add value.”

This year, the AAPN is focusing its recognition of Black History Month on building wealth. Through a series of events open to all Blue Cross associates, they will touch on financial literacy and building lasting wealth; the importance of helping youth succeed to build holistic wealth within the community; and the history of Black Wall Street and the ongoing reconstruction of the Greenwood District of Tulsa, which was destroyed in the 1921 massacre.

For Tatyana Beck, Blue Cross business analyst and AAPN member, this year’s recognition of Black History Month is motivating her to help the next generation.

“When you feel a personal connection to history, you feel more of a sense of responsibility,” Beck said. “We built this house and now which room do I want to go in? What’s next? How do we make this house a home? For me, it’s youth advancement and raising champions. We’re all here, this is our world, but they’re going to be here longer.”
