Blue Cross honors Veterans Day with Beyond the Yellow Ribbon commitment

November 10, 2017

In honor of Veterans Day, we are taking a moment to reflect on the importance of our military community.  In January 2016, Blue Cross was recognized as the first health plan in Minnesota to be designated a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon company for our support of service members, veterans and their families. We are proud to honor our military community today.

Employee commitment to military led to Yellow Ribbon designation

This effort was led by Blue Cross employee Kate Hoelscher, whose husband is an Army veteran. Kate’s deep commitment to helping Blue Cross earn this prestigious designation was highlighted in a recent Faces of Fearless story.

“My husband was deployed two days after we were married, so I learned quickly how important a support network was for military families. From the moment I started working at Blue Cross, I knew they were not only interested in supporting me, but they wanted to be a part of the support network for all veterans and active military employees who live in our community.”

Expanding resources and support for veterans and active military members

Since being named a Yellow Ribbon company, Blue Cross has continued to commit time and resources to support and honor veterans. A Yellow Ribbon Steering Committee partners with our Veterans Employee Resource Group (VETS) to ensure ongoing, proactive support of veterans and the military community.

“Since becoming a Yellow Ribbon company, Blue Cross has made significant progress with recruiting veterans, educating employees and leaders, supporting members who are veterans and volunteering to help the military community,” said Stacia Cohen, Blue Cross vice president and executive chair for the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon committee. “A highlight from this year was hosting a seminar on the Eagan campus for Yellow Ribbon companies throughout the state. We had the chance to collaborate, network and share best practices with fellow Yellow Ribbon companies.”

Another key accomplishment for 2017 was training Blue Cross nurse guides on referral resources available locally and statewide to better assist veteran members. “Improving the consumer experience for members who are veterans has been a big focus this year. Being able to connect them with community resources, government programs or Veterans Affairs to get the care and services they need makes a healthy difference in the lives of our veteran members,” said Cohen.

Thank you, veterans

Blue Cross is honored to be a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon company and we thank all veterans for their service, dedication and unwavering strength today and every day. Thank you.
