Blue Cross raises more than $1.1 million for nonprofits during giving campaign

October 6, 2017

Crews of Blue Cross employees wearing blue volunteer shirts can be seen in communities across the state or attending Blue Cross-sponsored events throughout the year. But the beginning of fall marks a special time for the company’s community story — our annual Community Giving Campaign.

Following the campaign that was in full force for three weeks in September, we’re happy to announce that Blue Cross exceeded the company’s $1 million goal. With a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation match, Blue Cross raised more than $1.1 million for nonprofits across Minnesota.

Employees have the ability to direct their giving to their choice of hundreds of Minnesota nonprofits, or they could give to one of six organizations Blue Cross highlighted as part of this year’s campaign. Each of these nonprofits align with the company’s strategic focus on healthy communities.

As part of the campaign, Blue Cross highlighted six organizations that align with the company’s strategic focus on healthy communities.

The featured nonprofits were:

We asked members of our leadership team to give us a behind the scenes look into what makes these nonprofits special.

American Diabetes Association

“The American Diabetes Association has great expertise and strong community partnerships to tackle one of our most pressing, and preventable, diseases.  We know that health outcomes are more strongly tied to community and environment than the clinical setting.  So, helping communities support healthy environments is critical to our work.”

-Paula Phillippe, senior vice president of human resources & corporate social responsibility

Hunger Solutions

“Hunger Solutions plays a vital leadership role in addressing hunger in Minnesota. In addition to supporting local food shelves, they fund programs like Market Bucks, which helps low-income Minnesotans access fresh, local food at farmers markets. Through their programs and advocacy, Hunger Solutions reaches every corner of Minnesota and is making important changes in the food system for Minnesotans who struggle with hunger.”

-Janelle Waldock, vice president community health & health equity

Minnesota Association for Environmental Education (MAEE)

“MAEE builds connections between people and the environment by providing education and hands on experiences. MAEE’s mission to create an environmentally literate citizenry naturally melds with Blue Cross’ focus on healthy communities, as communities are enhanced through sustainable environmental practices.”

-Betsy Moran, vice president, President and COO, ClearStone Solutions

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

“NAMI is guided by a mission to improve the lives of children and adults with mental illnesses and their families. Their far-ranging work includes education, support and advocacy. Through community health programs and services, NAMI makes a positive difference to those in need while also generating greater public understanding of mental illness.”

-Marc Baer, vice president health services & operations

The People’s Center

“The People’s Center provides healthcare for patients of all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. They connect patients with culturally competent, individualized healthcare and support, and never turn anyone away, even if they are unable to pay. Through this work, they have built a very special community, and helped many people live healthier lives.”

-Ruth Hafoka, vice president, human resources

YWCA Minneapolis

“For 125 years, YWCA Minneapolis has been at the forefront of social justice. By focusing on racial justice, they have advanced diversity and inclusion, while furthering race and gender equity. This important work is empowering communities to lead sustainable change and creating a future where all Minnesotans have a chance for better health.”

-Rosemond Owens, director of health equity, diversity & inclusion
