Many Minnesotans employed in the trucking industry now have access to comprehensive health insurance benefits through Blue Cross, thanks to an associated health plan (AHP) sponsored by the Minnesota Trucking Association (MTA).

Associated health plans are a special category of insurance products that allow small and midsize businesses and self-employed workers in same industry to band together and obtain healthcare coverage under a shared plan as if they were a single large employer. The offering is the first AHP for the trucking industry in state history.

John Hausladen, president of the Minnesota Trucking Association, has a keen understanding of how an AHP is uniquely suited to address the wants and needs of his industry.

“Many of our members are small business owners who understand the competitive advantages of strong benefits to attract and retain the best employees,” noted Hausladen. “With a workforce shortage in the commercial truck and bus industry, attractive and affordable health insurance benefits have become even more important. It’s critical to provide our members and their employees with access to health insurance that can save them money while ensuring great coverage.”

Hausladen led the charge for MTA members, alongside North Risk Partners, a Plymouth, Minn.-based organization specializing in strategic insurance solutions for people and businesses. North Risk Partners designed the plan for MTA and partnered with Blue Cross to administer benefits and provide access to its statewide network of healthcare providers.

North Risk Partners plan consultant Gary Helm played an integral role in overseeing much of that work. The organization currently manages an AHP for the Nebraska Trucking Association, providing a well-rounded view of health benefits that are most valued by motor carriers.

“I’m proud of the commitment our organizations have demonstrated to create this AHP for motor carriers in Minnesota,” noted Helm. “It’s very rewarding to help bring affordable, high-quality care to so many hard-working Minnesotans and their families. I know there’s going to be a lot of peace of mind that comes from carrying a Blue Cross card.”

MTA marks the fourth group North Risk Partners and Blue Cross have worked together to create an AHP for since 2019. Motor carriers will join members from Housing First Minnesota, Associated Builders and Contractors and the Minnesota Electrical Association to carry Blue Cross insurance through the unique plan sponsorship dynamic.

With members residing in all 87 counties and one of the largest networks of providers, the new AHP is the latest way Blue Cross is showing up for small- and mid-size employers—many of whom are the economic engines of the regions—across the state.
