Take 5 is a series in which we pose five questions to a Blue Cross associate and learn more about who they are, what they do, and how they help our members live their healthiest lives.

According to a recent report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in 36 children are now identified with autism spectrum disorder, or ASD – an increase from one in 44 children in 2018.

As ASD appears across all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups, the CDC report underscores “the considerable need for equitable and accessible screening, services, and supports for all children.”

In response to increasing demand for ASD resources and support, Blue Cross created a new role – the autism engagement coordinator. Melissa Lanning focuses on comprehensive non-clinical support, working alongside Blue Cross behavioral analyst case managers.

Melissa holds a bachelor’s degree in special education with an academic and behavioral strategist license. She shares more about her work in this edition of Take 5.

Can you explain your role at Blue Cross?

In short, I make initial contact with members who have received an autism diagnosis within the past 30 days and determine if there are any gaps in care. I assist parents and caregivers with finding providers and speech, physical and occupational therapy or interventions. I also help families with access to a variety of other available resources, including education, financial grants, transportation and childcare assistance.

On a typical day, I’ll speak to between 10 and 15 members – mostly parents of a child with a recent autism diagnosis. Because autism is new to most of them, I often hear, “I don’t know what I don’t know”. We go over the diagnosis and any services they may already have in place. Then I’ll inform them on common early interventions based on their child’s particular areas of need.

How does your previous experience create success for Blue Cross members?

As a former special education teacher, I’m able to come into difficult or transitional situations with familiarity and compassion. I’m also familiar with processes that can provide parents with advocacy resources, such as those through the Minnesota Department of Health, PACER and ARC. Lastly, I have a deep understanding of the procedural safeguards that protect people with disabilities between the ages of 3 and 21.

What has member feedback been like so far?

I’ve connected with parents who have been incredibly overwhelmed with the initial diagnosis and evaluation report and had no idea what to do with that information. These members are often incredibly relieved to know that Blue Cross offers comprehensive guidance and are thankful for the support. Providing a sense of reassurance and clarity on an effective course of action is extremely rewarding for me.

This role is the first-of-its kind not only at Blue Cross, but for health insurers in general. What opportunities do you see for the future?

Our goal is to continue serving members as they navigate what can be a very challenging diagnosis. I foresee growth and expansion of the Blue Cross Autism Program in ways that can complement and expand our current capabilities. As an organization, we are highly responsive to member feedback and continually adjust areas of development and investment based on what members share.

Do you have a message for families who may be struggling for support?

I tell them they will always be their child’s best advocate and that help is available. For all the Blue Cross members who have just received an autism diagnosis and don’t know where to turn, please reach out.
