Walking in the great Minnesota deep freeze, thaw and re-freeze

February 27, 2022

Late winter in Minnesota comes with big temperature swings that can turn parking lots, driveways and sidewalks into icy dangers. Knowing how to safely navigate such slippery surfaces can significantly lower your risk of falling when walking outdoors.

When it’s cold and slick outside, keep these tips in mind.

Choose the right gear

Your shoes will grip icy surfaces much more effectively with slip-on traction cleats, available online or at any specialty outdoor recreation store. Also, wearing gloves or mittens when walking means your hands aren’t as likely to be stuffed in your pockets – which can make all the difference should you need to catch your balance or brace yourself during a fall.

Stay aware of your surroundings

Look ahead at your path for cracks, holes, or uneven surfaces. When out at night, walk in areas with plenty of light and consider bringing a flashlight.

Make some adaptations

If you experience dizziness or balance disorders when walking, talk to your doctor. It might be a side effect of medication or the symptom of an underlying medical condition. Using a cane or walker is an effective way to maintain safe mobility. You can check to see if such durable medical equipment (DME) is available to you as part of your health plan.

And if walking outside in the winter just isn’t your cup of tea – look for some indoor alternatives. Blue Cross Medicare Advantage members have several fitness options available to them through SilverSneakers.
